SCAN's goal is to keep the children safe and to teach the parents skills in coping with their children. Our visitation sessions occur at SCANs offices, at clients homes or in public.

SCAN offers services to 19 counties in northern Indiana. Counties include: Adams, Allen, Cass, DeKalb, Elkhart, Fulton, Grant, Howard, Huntington, Kosciusko, LaGrange, Marshall, Miami, Noble, Steuben, St. Joseph, Wabash, Wells, Whitley. Our main office is in located in downtown Fort Wayne.

Additionally, we have four satellite offices in the following locations: Beacon Street in Fort Wayne; Warsaw, Indiana; Logansport, Indiana; and Wabash, Indiana. SCANs Healthy Families program holds the State contract to provide Technical Assistance and Quality Assurance for over 40 Healthy Families sites state-wide.

Family Restoration (FR) serves Allen County families who have already crossed the line of abuse or neglect. They are referred to SCAN by the courts or by the Allen County Department of Child Services. In 2010 SCAN provided FR services to 2,310 children and adults, a 30% increase from 2009.

FR provided supervised visitation to 429 Allen County families in 2010 and in-home intensive case management and/or short-term home-based therapy. Additionally FR offers paraprofessional homemaker services to help parents with home management issues such as cleaning the home, healthy food choices and other basic skills.

In 2010, 91 percent of FR clients did not return to services due to abuse or neglect and for 60 percent of FR clients, the parenting skills and knowledge were improved so the children could be returned home safely; 97 percent of parents actively and appropriately participated during supervised visits with their children; 100 percent of children in FR had no injuries that occurred which required medical treatment or reporting to DCS.

In the past year, FR has implemented a Resiliency Component in which children are assessed at the beginning of service for protective and risk factors to overcoming long-term effects of abuse/neglect.

We are gathering data in collaborative research with the Devereux Center for Resilient Children. Early results show parents are more engaged in the visitation process through specific skill-building activities they do with their children.
